LIFE IN AUSTRALIA

Commonwealth of Australia, commonly called as Australia, is a country in the southern hemisphere comprising the mainland of the world’s smallest continent, the major island of Tasmania, and numerous other islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Neighboring countries include Indonesia, East Timor, and Papua New Guinea to the north, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia to the north-east, and New Zealand to the south-east.

The capital is Canberra with the largest city being Sydney. English is the de facto national language. As per 2019 estimate, the population is 25, 287, 400. The currency is Australian Dollar (AUD)

Vocational Training in Australia

Vocational Education and Training (VET) is education and training that focuses on providing skills for being job ready.

VET provides the skills to help students to

  • Join the workforce for the first time
  • Re-join the workforce after break
  • Upgrade skills in their chosen field
  • Move into a different career

Traditionally, VET courses are known to focus more on providing exposure to real life and work oriented occupational skills. VET courses cover:

  • Basic life skills, even literacy and numeracy training
  • Basic vocational skills for particular occupations (such as Chef, Business Administrator)
  • Semi-professional vocational training (such as Business advertising, Occupational Health & safety)
  • Study areas with a practical focus (such as Hospitality, Business Management)

VET courses, particularly at the Diploma and Advanced Diploma level can often lead into Higher Education courses such as Bachelors degree.

The National Centre for Vocational Education Research or NCVER is a not-for-profit company owned by the federal, state and territory ministers responsible for training. It is responsible for collecting, managing, analysing, evaluating and communicating research and statistics about vocational education and training (VET). QCVE follows the guidelines as laid down by Vocational Education and Training (VET) system.

Indicative cost of living

Migration regulations in Australia require international students to show evidence that they can contribute to the cost of living and studying in Australia. This helps to ensure students are better able to make the most of their studies and have a safe and enjoyable experience in Australia.

While international students are able to supplement their income with money earned through part-time work in Australia, the ‘living costs’ requirement helps to support the success of students in their studies by ensuring that they  don’t have to rely on such work to meet all their expenses.

From October 2019, the basic rate of living costs under the Migration regulations increased. Under these regulations prospective student visa applicants and their family members must have access to the following funds to meet the living costs requirements:

  • For students or guardians – AUD$21,041
  • For partners coming with you – AUD$7,362
  • For a child coming with you – AUD$3,152

Students must demonstrate that the funds they are relying upon to meet the costs of studying in Australia will be genuinely available to them during their stay in Australia.

The figures above are indicative only and that costs can vary significantly depending on where you live in Australia. You should be prepared in case your living costs are greater than the indicated figures.

Family (Dependants)

If you intend to bring your family with you, they will also need to have a visa and be covered by health insurance. Family members include your partner (married or de facto) and your children under 18 years of age. You will need to provide proof of your family relationships with official documents including birth certificates and marriage certificates. For more details, visit www.homeaffairs.gov.au

You also need to be aware that if you bring any dependants with you that you are responsible for supporting them, and this includes paying education fees for dependants who study in Australia. School age children are required to study by law, and full fees must be paid by their parents/ guardians.

ACCOMMODATION

Living off Campus Information

As your campus is based in Melbourne, you should seek accommodation in or near that area.

QCVE does not provide any form of student accommodation however college staff will provide limited, office-based assistance without charge to students who undertake to find their own accommodation, employment and airport transportation. (If students request in writing that QCVE should make arrangements on their behalf, charges will apply)

Accommodation Options Include

Share Accommodation:

Your own bedroom in a shared flat or house which generally involves sharing rental, electricity/gas and phone bills.

Approximately $160 to $210+ per week

Private Board

Your own bedroom, usually in family home, meals included. Approximately $150 to $190+ per week.

Renting a Flatette

Single bed/living room with its own basic kitchen, and often a shared bathroom. Approximately $100 to $200+ per week.

Renting a House or Flat

One or more bedrooms, a kitchen, bathroom, living area, and usually laundry. Approximately $210 to $310+ per week for one bedroom plus $80 to $170+ per week for each additional bedroom.
